For the first time in its 43-year history, the Innovation and Excellence Awards will shine a spotlight on the booming purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) sector with a brand-new award category.

The Property Council’s Innovation and Excellence awards program, now in its 43rd year in partnership with Rider Levett Bucknall, highlights ground-breaking innovations and exceptional leadership in Australia’s property industry.
Student Accommodation Council Executive Director Torie Brown said the new category highlights the increasing importance of PBSA in Australia’s property landscape and celebrates the investment and expertise driving its success.
“Australia’s student accommodation sector is a world-class industry, delivering high-quality, purpose-built housing that is attracting significant investment into our cities. The level of innovation and design excellence we’re seeing is a testament to the sector’s maturity and growth,” Ms Brown said.
“Introducing a dedicated PBSA award category shines a spotlight on the outstanding developments that are providing exceptional student housing Australia-wide. This is an opportunity to recognise the owners, operators, and developers shaping the future of student living,” she said.
Former CEO of Student One and pioneer in the student accommodation industry, Tim Weston, will join the judging panel as the inaugural PBSA expert.
Mr Weston said he is thrilled to be part of this new award category, reflecting the maturity of the sector, while celebrating the best in PBSA design, innovation and service.
“This award is an important step in highlighting the innovation and investment driving the student accommodation sector. I’m looking forward to seeing projects that not only raise the bar in quality but also deliver exceptional experiences for students while meeting investment goals.”
“PBSA developments are more than just buildings – they are communities that support students through one of the most important stages of their lives. It’s exciting to celebrate those who are leading the way in creating places that prioritise wellbeing, connectivity, and sustainability.”
“I’m eager to see entries that challenge traditional models and push boundaries in design, sustainability, and service. The best PBSA projects combine functionality with creativity, providing students with spaces where they can feel at home.”
Eligible entrants will be projects, developments or refurbishments that have been completed by 31 December 2024 (completed in the past 5 years) and have been operating for at least six months as at 31 December 2024.
Nominations close 11:59pm 12 March 2025, with the winner to be announced at the Property Council of Australia/Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards Gala Dinner in September.
