Air conditioners are used primarily to create a pleasant, low humidity environment, but they can provide much more than just comfort. When they are clean and working efficiently they can also help keep the air itself clean, and actually reduce contaminants.

But when they’re dirty, and not maintained regularly, they can become a breeding ground for fungi and mould, blowing these dangerous toxins around the home, and increasing their presence in the air by up to a staggering 137 times.

This can lead to a whole host of health issues, from runny nose, itchy eyes and respiratory distress to lung infections, allergic reactions and greatly exacerbated asthma symptoms.

This was proven in a 2023 study entitled “A Method to Evaluate and Eliminate Fungal Contamination in Household Air Conditioners” by Yoshiki Shiraishi et al. In this study the split system air conditioners in the living rooms of 17 households of occupants who were suffering from respiratory conditions were dismantled and tested for fungi and mould.

Swabs were taken from the filters, coils, blower fan and air vents in the air conditioning units, while samples were also taken from furniture surfaces, and the air in the homes.

Very high levels of fungi/mould were detected in all areas before they were cleaned, with the most common ones found being Cladosporium,,

Toxicocladosporium, Aureobasidium, Aspergillus and Rhodotorula, among others. These fungi are well known for causing and exacerbating respiratory issues.

The parts were then pressure washed with specialised cleaners and retested.

Incredibly, it was found that high pressure washing in this way reduced these harmful fungi and mould by up to 99.7%.

The results of the study were startling, but the message was simple. Dirty air conditioners can pollute the air with fungi, and contribute to a swathe of respiratory disorders and allergies. However, pressure cleaning can remove these harmful fungi and restore the ability of air conditioners to actually help keep the air clean.

Properly functioning, clean air conditioners can control temperature and reduce humidity, keeping the air clean and fungi low. This is why the air conditioner manufacturers recommend having your air conditioners cleaned al least every 12 months.
